Having just finished Legendary, the second installment in Stephanie Garber’s Caraval series, I can confidently say that this was an utterly captivating read. For a slow reader like me to devour a 400-page book in a single day speaks volumes about how gripping this story is. The plot, pacing, and every intricate detail came together in a way that made it impossible to put down.

What makes Legendary truly stand out is its shift in focus. While the first novel centered on Scarlet, this installment places the spotlight on her sister, Donatella. Tella’s journey is deeply personal as she fights to save someone dear to her heart, all while navigating a world filled with danger, mystery, and enchantment. Her story brings a fresh perspective to the series, and Garber’s ability to make Tella’s character so compelling proves her skill as a storyteller.

One of the most exciting elements is the introduction of a mysterious friend early in the book. Fans of Once Upon a Broken Heart will immediately recognize this character, which only adds to the richness of Garber’s interconnected world. The return of the Caraval setting—this time off the island and in a more expansive, real-world backdrop—heightens the stakes. The fate of the world hangs in the balance, with the looming return of the Fates, all sparked by a single deck of cards and the bold curiosity of a girl desperate to cure someone she loves.

The storyline is woven with twists and turns, especially as we unravel the identity of Legend. While I found myself conflicted about who Legend truly is (a revelation that didn’t entirely sit well with me), it’s hard not to appreciate the brilliance of the buildup. The hints scattered throughout the book were exceptional, and discovering his identity halfway through added a layer of excitement to the rest of the story. It’s clear that Garber poured incredible thought and detail into every aspect of the narrative.

Garber’s signature magic shines once again, as the Caraval series continues to transport readers to a whimsical, enchanting world that feels alive with warmth and wonder. The recurring theme of “it’s only a game” takes on a deeper resonance in Legendary, as the characters grapple with choices that could change their fates—and the world’s—forever.

Having read Caraval, Once Upon a Broken Heart, and now Legendary, I am more eager than ever to wrap up the series with Finale. The prospect of diving into Spectacular after that makes the journey through this magical world all the more thrilling. Stephanie Garber has created a universe that is not only enchanting but also deeply human, filled with love, loss, and the delicate balance between risk and reward.

Legendary is a masterpiece in its own right. With its engaging plot, memorable characters, and richly imagined setting, it solidifies Garber’s place as a master of magical storytelling. For anyone who has yet to experience the Caraval universe, you’re in for a journey that will sweep you off your feet. Just remember, it’s only a game.
